Train Ticket Cancellation Charges & Refunds
Travel plans can change unexpectedly, leading to last-minute cancellations. However, the hassle begins when you have to pay a certain cancellation fee or receive an accurate refund amount. Understanding how much a refund on the cancellation of a train ticket is essential to avoid unnecessary financial losses. The train ticket refund also varies depending on several factors like the waiting list, reservation list, and IRCTC refund rules.
You can check out your cancellation charges by accessing the IRCTC website and inserting your PNR number to know the applicable Tatkal charges. If you have placed your reservation via Paytm booking then you can also cancel it from the same platform. However, as per the train ticket cancellation refund rules, a TDR counter ticket booked in Tatkal cannot be cancelled on the spot.
Tatkal Ticket Cancellation Charges
The train ticket refund and cancellation in Indian Railway depend on the class of services as well as the time of the cancellation. In case where waiting tickets are cancelled online, the refund will be given only after deducting the cancellation charges of ₹ 20/- +GST per passenger, if the ticket is cancelled online up to four hours before the scheduled departure of the Train.
Confirm Ticket Charges- No train ticket refund is granted on the cancellation of confirmed Tatkal tickets. Cancellation charges apply for Tatkal waiting tickets in case they remain waitlisted and do not get confirmed. Passengers are charged ₹60 for cancelling a Tatkal ticket that is on the waiting list.
1st AC Cancellation Charges
- 48 hours before the scheduled departure: ₹240 per passenger.
- Between 48 hours and 12 hours before the scheduled departure: 25% of the fare is subject to a minimum of ₹240.
- Between 12 hours and 4 hours before the scheduled departure: 50% of the fare is subject to a minimum of ₹240.
- Less than 4 hours before the scheduled departure and up to chart preparation: 50% of the fare is subject to a minimum of ₹240.
- After chart preparation: No train ticket refund is allowed after the chart is prepared.
2AC Cancellation Charges
Second AC tickets provide a comfortable travel experience with fewer berths per compartment compared to 3AC.
- 48 hours before the scheduled departure: ₹200 per passenger.
- Between 48 hours and 12 hours before the scheduled departure: 25% of the fare is subject to a minimum of ₹200.
- Between 12 hours and 4 hours before the scheduled departure: 50% of the fare is subject to a minimum of ₹200.
- Less than 4 hours before the scheduled departure and up to chart preparation: 50% of the fare is subject to a minimum of ₹200.
- After chart preparation: No train ticket refund is allowed after the chart is prepared.
3AC Cancellation Charges
Third AC tickets are a more economical option while still providing air-conditioned comfort.
- 48 hours before the scheduled departure: ₹180 per passenger.
- Between 48 hours and 12 hours before the scheduled departure: 25% of the fare is subject to a minimum of ₹180.
- Between 12 hours and 4 hours before the scheduled departure: 50% of the fare is subject to a minimum of ₹180.
- Less than 4 hours before the scheduled departure and up to chart preparation: 50% of the fare is subject to a minimum of ₹180.
Sleeper (SL) Class Cancellation Charges
Sleeper class is the most commonly used class for long-distance travel in India due to its affordability.
- 48 hours before the scheduled departure: ₹120 per passenger.
- Between 48 hours and 12 hours before the scheduled departure: 25% of the fare is subject to a minimum of ₹120.
- Between 12 hours and 4 hours before the scheduled departure: 50% of the fare is subject to a minimum of ₹120.
- Less than 4 hours before the scheduled departure and up to chart preparation: 50% of the fare is subject to a minimum of ₹120.
- After chart preparation: No train ticket refund is allowed after the chart is prepared.
RAC Ticket Cancellation Charges
RAC tickets allow you to board and share a berth. You can cancel an RAC ticket before the chart is prepared for a ₹60 fee. After the chart is prepared, unconfirmed RAC tickets are treated like waitlisted tickets and are automatically cancelled with a ₹60 deduction.
Following chart preparation, RAC tickets are handled in the same manner as waitlisted tickets and will be cancelled automatically if not confirmed. Refunds after a deduction of ₹60 per passenger comply with train ticket refund regulations.
